I speak Britcom

28 Apr

I think the secret to being a happy mommy stems from being a happy wifey.

My hubby and I have many things in common that help things along including a love for all things Britcom.

Some of the best times we have together are on Saturday nights watching PBS with a glass of wine and just enjoying the hilarity. We have our favorites of course, but really almost anything the BBC throws out there is worth at least a watch or two. There are the classics and not so classics that tickle or funny bones and stick in our memories.

In some ways our love of Britcoms has helped us develop our own secret language. You know, like you did with your bestie when you were kids? Now, I never mastered pig latin or any other concoction anyone would come up with. But for some reason, AbFabsticks, Sweetie Darling!

Most of the time the quotes that we throw at each other are completely out of context both from what the writers intended, and the current situation we find ourselves in. I guess, that is what makes things all the funnier. Sitting in traffic, stressed out by our daughter, whatever, one of us will turn to the other and just deadpan a random quote. Jennifer Saunders, John Cleese, Steven Moffat, and the list goes on. Their humor helps us stay connected with each other through the ridiculous. I hope all marrieds out their find their own connection.

I love that it makes us feel like we are part of our own secret club. Because really, isn’t that what marriage is about? Finding a common thread of laughter helps keep me sane. Knowing that my hubby shares the joke with me is priceless beyond measure. It says, “I get it, I get you and I love you in spite of it all. It’s us against the world baby, or at least the daughter.”

On these long days when he is away and I am here holding down the fort, I get a kick out of sending him a text with an outrageous quote from one of our favorites. He gets a laugh meant just for him. Just another way to say: I love you. I’m thinking of you, and I’m glad we’re in this for the long haul.

It’s Saturday, I hope PBS has something good for us tonight. I think I will go and put a Sam Adams in the fridge just in case.
